Jennie Reid Elementary raises its National Blue Ribbon school flag

Principal Diane Weeden and former principals Patricia Herrera-Johnson, now principal at Lomax Elementary School, and Angela Garza-Viator, now LPISD executive director of human resources, received the flag when they traveled to Washington, D.C., Nov. 6 and 7, 2017. They were honored by the U.S. Department of Education as Jennie Reid was officially recognized as one of 342 National Blue
Ribbon Schools.

The Jennie Reid family joined at the flagpole for the ceremony, where the student flag crew assisted in adding the National Blue Ribbon School flag to the pole under the United States and Texas flags. Several students provided information on the National Blue Ribbon Schools recognition, and third-grader Jesavion Woods performed a song that he wrote for the occasion.

Jennie Reid Elementary received notification of the award on Sept. 28, 2017, when U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the names of the schools recognized. The campus was one of 26 Texas schools—from more than 8,300 in the state—nominated for this honor by Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath.

All National Blue Ribbon Schools are honored in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates. Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments on nationally normed tests, while Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest
performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years.

Jennie Reid, which serves 467 students, is the second La Porte ISD campus to earn this honor in the past six years. Lomax Elementary School was named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School.
